Felt is one of the oldest materials made by humans.
In contemporary sculpture, it challenges what we expect from form. It bends, compresses, and reveals how a work is made. It shows pressure, weight, and the passage of time.

In Jacobo Alonso’s (@jacobo.alonso) practice, material choices are intentional. Felt allows the body to emerge through construction rather than representation , through layers, cuts, and seams rather than through a fixed image.

Sometimes, the best way into an exhibition is to begin with what the work is made of.

Sharing a recent collaboration with the Art & History Museums of Maitland for their upcoming exhibition The Situated Body: Reconfiguring the Symbolic, featuring the work of Mexican contemporary artist Jacobo Alonso (@jacobo.alonso).

SoTA Collection contributed to the early-stage artist pre-selection and liaison process, supporting the alignment between artistic intent and the museum’s vision.

It’s meaningful to participate in projects that expand contemporary dialogue and connect audiences with compelling artistic perspectives.

The exhibition opens January 23, 2026.

From marble to felt — from agony to metamorphosis.

The original Laocoön and His Sons, discovered in 1506 and now in the Vatican Museums, has always represented the height of classical beauty and struggle.
In his textile version, Jacobo Alonso gives this ancient scene a new body, one made of hundreds of layers of hand-stitched felt. The softness of the material reshapes the drama of marble, turning weight into movement, and pain into something almost tender.

What we love most about this piece is how it feels alive. You can almost sense the breath between the layers, the humanity returning to myth.

A quiet moment in New York — Es Devlin’s Congregation at the Perelman Performing Arts Center.
A temporary, site-specific installation that held the room in light and stillness, reminding us how art gathers us, even briefly, under one sky.

On January 19, 2022, I teamed up with Downtown Arts District to bring The Language of Color to life—a vibrant solo show by Carolina Guillermet.

Carolina, is an artist based in Costa Rica and Switzerland, she dives deep into the emotional power of color, blending geometric abstraction with the theory of color.

So, what’s geometric abstraction? Think shapes, lines, and patterns that break free from reality!

And the theory of color? It’s all about how colors mix, match, and make us feel.

I'm so grateful for spaces like Downtown Arts District that give you the freedom to take over and materialize ideas.
